Questions people ask
How is inheritance divided in Pakistan?+
For Muslims, by Islamic law (mostly the Hanafi school): first funeral costs and debts, then any bequest up to one third, then fixed shares (wife 1/8 with children, 1/4 without; husband 1/4 or 1/2; mother 1/6 or 1/3; daughters 1/2 or 2/3), and the rest to the residuary heirs, with a son getting twice a daughter's share.
Do orphaned grandchildren inherit in Pakistan?+
Yes. Under section 4 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961, if a son or daughter died before the deceased, their children take the share that parent would have received. This calculator doesn't add that share, so get legal advice.
Can daughters be denied their share?+
No. A daughter's share is fixed by Islamic law and Pakistani law. Depriving women of inheritance is a crime under section 498A of the Pakistan Penal Code.
How do I get a succession certificate?+
Through NADRA's Succession Facilitation Unit in most provinces, or from a civil court. It lists the legal heirs and is needed to transfer bank accounts and property.
