After every budget, the same question goes round the office: “How much tax will come out of my salary this year?” For 2026-27 the rates for salaried people came down a little, so most people pay slightly less each month than last year. Here's what that looks like in real numbers.
The basic rule
- No tax on yearly salary up to Rs 600,000.
- Above that, each slice is taxed at its own rate: the higher rate only applies to the part in the higher slab, not your whole salary.
- Your employer deducts one twelfth of the yearly tax each month.
Example: Rs 150,000 a month
That's Rs 1,800,000 a year. In 2026-27 the yearly tax is Rs 72,000, so about Rs 6,000 is deducted each month and Rs 144,000 reaches your account. Compared with 2025-26, that's Rs 0 less tax over the year.

Monthly tax at different salaries
| Monthly salary | Monthly tax | Take-home | Less than last year (monthly) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rs 50,000 | Rs 0 | Rs 50,000 | Rs 0 |
| Rs 100,000 | Rs 500 | Rs 99,500 | Rs 0 |
| Rs 150,000 | Rs 6,000 | Rs 144,000 | Rs 0 |
| Rs 200,000 | Rs 13,000 | Rs 187,000 | Rs 500 |
| Rs 300,000 | Rs 34,667 | Rs 265,333 | Rs 4,167 |
| Rs 500,000 | Rs 92,000 | Rs 408,000 | Rs 14,750 |
Worth knowing
- Tax is worked out on your yearly salary, so a bonus or increment can change the deduction for the rest of the year.
- File a return every year to stay on the Active Taxpayers List (a filer). Non-filers pay higher withholding tax on banking, cars and property.
- If your employer deducted too much, you can claim a refund through your return.
