A "marla" isn't the same size everywhere in Pakistan. In the government revenue record (patwar) one marla is 272.25 sq ft, while many housing societies use a 225 sq ft marla, and some use 250. A kanal is always 20 marla, but its size changes with the marla too.

On a 10 marla plot, the gap between a 225 and a 272.25 sq ft marla is 473 sq ft, the size of two or three rooms.

Before you buy

  • Get it in writing how many sq ft the society's or seller's marla is.
  • When comparing prices per marla, convert to sq ft first; a cheaper marla may just be a smaller one.
  • Check the plot's length and width on the map (for example 25 × 45 ft).
  • One acre = 43,560 sq ft = 8 kanal (160 marla) on the revenue measure.
