Apps that promise an "instant loan with just your CNIC" often hide the real cost: a processing fee taken off up front, a term of a few days, and a daily fine when you're late. Below are examples of the kind of offers people report (not any one app's terms).
Small loan, big cost
| Asked for | Received | To repay | Term | Cost | For the term | Per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rs 10,000 | Rs 7,000 | Rs 10,000 | 7 days | Rs 3,000 | 43% | 2235% |
| Rs 10,000 | Rs 8,500 | Rs 10,500 | 14 days | Rs 2,000 | 24% | 613% |
| Rs 20,000 | Rs 18,000 | Rs 21,000 | 30 days | Rs 3,000 | 17% | 203% |
A Rs 3,000 cost over 7 days sounds small, but over a year it comes to thousands of percent. A bank personal loan is far cheaper.
Is the app genuine?
- A digital lender must be licensed by the SECP, which lists approved apps on its website.
- Don't install an app that asks for your contacts, photos or gallery.
- Before borrowing, see the total cost, term and late fine in writing.
If you're harassed
- Keep screenshots of threatening messages and calls.
- File a complaint on the SECP's complaint portal.
- For threats or blackmail, report to the cybercrime authorities (NCCIA, formerly FIA Cyber Crime).
