Many people worry that an increment will push them into the "next slab" and leave them with less. That never happens. The higher rate only applies to the part of your salary above the line; the rest is taxed as before.
What an increment adds to take-home pay
| Old salary | New salary | Increment | Extra tax a month | Extra take-home a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rs 95,000 | Rs 105,000 | Rs 10,000 | Rs 600 | Rs 9,400 |
| Rs 180,000 | Rs 190,000 | Rs 10,000 | Rs 1,700 | Rs 8,300 |
| Rs 260,000 | Rs 280,000 | Rs 20,000 | Rs 4,667 | Rs 15,333 |
| Rs 450,000 | Rs 480,000 | Rs 30,000 | Rs 9,100 | Rs 20,900 |
In every case take-home pay goes up. The monthly slab lines are roughly: Rs 50,000, Rs 100,000, Rs 183,333, Rs 266,667, Rs 341,667, Rs 466,667, Rs 583,333.
